Sphere Electrical and Emerson Network Power Deploy Custom Server Room in a Box

Modular solution installs quickly, does not require facility floor space

Lewis Center, Ohio [November 9, 2016]

Sphere Electrical, LLC, a licensed electrical contractor specializing in IT and telecommunication infrastructure support systems, announced the deployment of a custom, prefabricated data center for a major American manufacturer of household products, located in Northern Ohio. The container, manufactured by Emerson Network Power, soon to become Vertiv, allows server rooms to be deployed up to 40 percent faster, and with a cost savings of up to 25 percent over a typical data center build.

Sphere Electrical worked with the customer to define the needs for their one-of-a-kind mobile container, equipped with raised floor, uninterruptible power supply (UPS), precision cooling, server and network distribution racks, and a fire suppression system. The customized version of the Emerson SmartMod™ infrastructure enabled fast addition of data center compute capacity without using facility floor space or disrupting production operations.

“When floor space is at a premium, a modular, outdoor data center structure like SmartMod is a very viable option,” states Brian Collins, president and owner of Sphere Electrical.

The 17,000 pound container was shipped to the customer via semi-truck. Sphere Electrical unloaded it at the site, navigated it through the facility to the designated location, and completed final connection of the power, fiber, and network cables to make the new server room fully operational.

“The server room arrived on site and was up and running one week later. It’s an added bonus that the room can be picked up and moved to a different location, if production conditions change,” said Collins.

“Companies are challenged to keep up with growing data center requirements, but still need to address challenges such as limited space, strict deployment timelines, high availability and efficient operation,” said Steve McKinney, vice president and general manager of power management for Emerson Network Power. “Data center managers who work with experienced electrical contractors and infrastructure providers, like Sphere Electrical, can have a flexible, modular solution that meets their business goals.”
